Nearly two months late - I just watched Grindhouse for the first time. Having decided that in no way would I be convinced to compromise the experience of watching a new Tarantino film by viewing a recording taken from somebody’s handheld camera in a U.S. cinema, I was finally swayed this week by my good friend Lee. He talked about it for the better part of half an hour, and it seems everybody else has been happy to settle for the ‘CAM’ version that’s floating around on the net. Doesn’t seem like Grindhouse is going to be coming to the big screen any time soon, and I can’t be arsed to wait for the DVD… so I sat myself down for the long-winded 3 hours.

Thoughts?

The “Machete” trailer at the start of the film should definitely be made into a proper feature length film. I had a huge grin on my face after watching it. Everything about it was hilarious, especially the narrator - “they fucked with the wrong mexican”.

The rest of the adverts were quality too. “Werewolf women of the S.S.” had me chuckling, what a cracking idea, I don’t know how the hell Rob Zombie came up with that but it’s pretty bizarre. Loving the Nic Cage cameo too. DON’T DON’T DON’T DON’T DON’T DON’T DON’T DON’T… hilarious. Thanksgiving “you’ll come home for the holidays… in a bodybag” raised many smiles :D . Hell, all of these spoof movies would have made entertaining feature films.

Planet Terror
- fergie was hot. very hot. glad she got fucked up mind.
- saeed had a british accent? and he cut peoples balls off? awesome.
- the whole thing was full of top notch dialogue. stuff i could quote for days.
- the amount of puss popping in this film is disgusting.
- “some of the best jokes are about cripples”. that whole scene was hilarious. ray/wray(?) is awesome. what was the random flip off the hospital wall about? loved it.
- kid shot himself in the car by accident :D brilliant.
- nothing pisses me off more than out of sync audio. unfortunately i had to watch the whole of grindhouse this way. shitty camera recordings make my blood boil.
- the random sex scene was wonderful, not for the sex but for the stump/wooden peg leg in the air instead of a normal leg.
- el wray character in general was great.
- the film reminded me a lot of from dusk til dawn. except it was far, far more entertaining. many people will disagree with that i expect. hell, i enjoyed it more than shaun of the dead. i haven’t the foggiest why. maybe its because it was just a lot more subtle with it’s comedy and more believeble than DTD.
- why does tarantino always cast himself as a quirky character with ‘cool’ lines? pretty unnecessary. having said that, the way he got stabbed in the eye was pretty funny.
- machine gun leg :D … what the fuck? … i take back what i said about the film being believable.

Death Proof
- first impressions, 4 fairly hot birds in a car \o/
- wait a second, its only 4 hot birds in a car?
- why is it only 4 hot birds in a car?
- and why are they doing nothing but talking shit? what was the whole point of that “butterfly” speech?
- oh wait, now they’re in a bar? is anything ever going to happen?
- fuck… the lap dance reel was missing, i was well up for that… (apparently it’ll be on the dvd)
- oh shit, now there’s 4 other chicks in a car?
- oh shit, they’re talking crap too?
- loving the psycho stuntman… although we never actually know much about him. would have preferred build up around the stuntman rather than the 4 pretty boring girls. in tarantino i trust though.
- the last twenty minutes of the film were mint. one of the better car chases i’ve ever seen, and i can’t help but think that the whole film was written for that car chase. loved it…

*ahem* In conclusion, while Planet Terror only really ever provided me with the odd entertaining moment, Tarantino’s film about a psychotic stuntmen looking for highway fun had me completely gripped towards the end. Maybe it’s because I’m not really a big horror film buff, especially where zombies, etc. are concerned - I kinda get that once you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all kinda vibe, but Planet Terror was one of the better ones. I got a lot of kicks from some of the one-liners and quotes in it, and some of the characters were ace, but all-in-all it didn’t do much for me. Tarantino’s was pretty much the opposite, I can’t pin any one moment down as a highlight - I found myself ridiculously bored until Stuntman Mike went a little crazy and started to kill. Then I was hooked, but even then the film was a long sit. The car chase, which is probably the best I’ve ever seen, more than made up for that though.

Overall; Planet Terror - great dialogue, moments of bliss but otherwise wasnt that good. Death Proof - dull for the first hour or so, fantastic from then on with one of the best car chases you’ll ever see. Three hours of monotonous, junk film - but that was the whole point…
