With The O.C. finished, Studio 60 on an indefinite hiatus and Friday Night Lights not on this week - I’ve found myself with a void in the world of TV. Prison Break and F.N.L. are both a handful of episodes away from being at their season finale anyway, so soon I’m gonna have nothing to watch on TV.
Reading the usual avenues and websites, the biggest show that I’m not watching in America appears to be “Heroes” - a serial saga about people all over the world discovering that they have superpowers and trying to deal with how this change affects their lives. Some of the superheroes who will be introduced to the viewing audience include Peter Petrelli, an almost 30-year-old male nurse who suspects he might be able to fly, Isaac Mendez, a 28-year-old junkie who has the ability to paint images of the future when he is high, Niki Sanders, a 33-year-old Las Vegas showgirl who does things that are mysteriously connected with mirrors, Hiro Nakamura, a 24-year-old Japanese comic-book geek who literally makes time stand still, D.L. Hawkins, a 31-year-old inmate who can walk through walls, Matt Parkman, a beat cop who can hear other people’s thoughts, and Claire Bennet, a 17-year-old cheerleader who defies death at every turn. As the viewing audience is discovering the nature of each hero’s powers, the heroes, themselves, are discovering what having superpowers means to them as well as the larger picture of where their superpowers come from. (Yeah, I did just paste that from TV.com, whatcha gonna do about it?)
I’m not usually one for super heroes and magical powers, but this show has been a hit with the people who enjoy Lost, Prison Break and the other shows that I enjoy… so maybe there’s something in it for me. My screenwriting teacher recommended it too. If it’s a bit darker themeatically than the stereotypical super hero shows usually are I can see myself liking it. So without further ado, I’m running away to give Heroes two or three hours of my time. See if it can hook me. If you like the sound of it or want to watch it, then here’s all the episodes thus far:

EDIT - I’ve watched the first four episodes now and maybe it’s because I’ve got nothing better to do whilst I’m stuck at home, but this show has really grabbed me. The ‘powers’ that all the characters have are pretty clichéd but I really like how many storylines are all going on at once. I expect that they’re all going to run into each other, and towards the end of the season there’ll be scenes where they’re all fighting crime together. That’ll be cheesey, but it’s been ok so far. The japanese guy Hiro is without a doubt my favourite, he’s got the exact special powers that I’ve always dreamed of having - the ability to stop/fastforward/rewind time. Watching him do it has made the show for me. The cheerleader is outrageously hot too, as is the single mum Nikki. That’s always a plus for a TV show.
I’m not really into the guy who thinks he can fly, or the asian guy with the dead dad… but all the storylines are pretty interesting. I don’t know if this has the pulling power to last a few seasons, I can’t see where they’ll go after the finale… which seems to be a nuclear attack on New York. The bad guy appears to be linked with each and every character in some way, which I don’t like just yet, but I’m looking forward to seeing how that turns out.
I’m about to go and watch episode 5. Heroes has kind of got a character for everyone really, and all the powers that you wished you had when you were a kid without the superman/spiderman gloss! It’s a bit quirky, a bit dark and there’s shit loads going on. I like it…
