It’s been a couple of weeks now since the O.C. finale, and as sad as it is, my friday mornings aren’t the same without it.
It’s no secret that the show has been on a decline for some time - season two was absolute bollocks, but season three was an improvement, and despite the death of Mischa Barton’s character, season four started off fairly well. I was still addicted anyway.
I didn’t really know where they’d go when they killed Marissa off, but season four did look promising. Although, towards the end it went on a bit of a bender and there were so many new characters it didn’t feel anything like it did a few years ago. Characters were introduced instead of utilising already existing ones… Bullet, Frank, the french guy, Summer’s eco-friend, endless new characters in Kaitlyn’s circle all came in and didn’t really offer much ‘drama’, just storylines for the sake of storylines it seems.
The finale came and the first 45 minutes were pretty disappointing. The lead up to the finale was a let down too. And it seemed the writers were going to take the easy route out of the programme with a natural disaster, which seemed to only serve the purpose of destroying the Cohen’s house. I dunno, maybe I’m being a little cynical, but I expected more from the writers who had me totally engrossed throughout series 1, 2 and to an extent, series 3.
The final ten minutes of the show were a completely different tale though. A mix of flashbacks and flashforwards created the perfect ending, free from questions about characters’ futures and it filled any remaining plot holes. All this in relatively silent dialogue, over the top of one of the most beautiful songs The O.C. has ever discovered. I hate cliches but it seems they really did leave the best until last. I won’t say much more as I know some haven’t seen the finale yet, but I feel compelled to post the remaining six minutes for those that want to see it for the first time or want to relive it:
And of course, here is the final song ever heard on the O.C., Patrick Park’s “Life Is A Song”…

Quality programme. I’ll miss it a lot.
